28. The First Irish Railway: Westland Row to Kingstown by Kurt Kullmann (2018). The History Press Ireland. The first Irish railway ran from Westland Row, in the centre of Dublin, to Kingstown, then a seaside resort on the coast south of the city. This historic line is now the DART line, Kingstown has become Dún Laoghaire and the world has changed around it. Softback, 160pp, in good read condition.€5

135. The Castlederg and Victoria Bridge Tramway by Dr.E M Patterson. Pub.Colourpoint Books (1998)
This 7 mile long narrow gauge (3ft) line was situated entirely within County Tyrone, linking the market town of Castlederg through Spamount, Crew and Fyfin to Victoria Bridge (a junction with the main line of the Great Northern Railway). The line followed the course of the road for almost its entire length and operated from 1883 until 1933.
Softback, 96 pages, illustrated. A 'working' copy is the best way to describe this item - reflected in the price.SOLD

142. Thro' Rare West Kerry: Tralee & Dingle Railway (1911)
A 1989 fascimile of the original guidebook published by the Tralee & Dingle Railway. 36 pages plus card cover, illustrated and full of period advertising together with a synopsis of the plan to reinstate a section of the railway from Tralee to Blennerville. The railway did reopen for several years but has since fallen into dereliction again.

163. The Trains Long Departed: Ireland's Lost Railways by Tom Ferris. Pub.Gill & Macmillan (2010)
The Trains Long Departed tells the story of Ireland's lost railways, the repository of optimism, disappointment and nostalgia. The first Irish railway was established as early as 1834 and by 1914 the network covered the entire island. However, the development of the internal combustion engine, combined with the inherent unprofitability of many of the smaller and more remote lines resulted in a drastic cull of the system in the course of the twentieth century.
Illustrated hardback with dustwrapper. This is an unloved 'reading' copy and while clean has not been cared for - priced accordingly.SOLD

The book begins with an account of Connemara, in the west of Ireland, and the various schemes put forward to link its two main settlements, Galway and Clifden. The first of these was proposed in 1860, but it was over 30 years before the line was built by the Midland Great Western Railway who operated it until 1925 when the government shied away from Nationalisation but merged all railways operating only in Irish Free State into Great Southern Railways. The line closed in 1935. There are eleven chapters including Train Services, Locomotives and Rolling Stock and Road Services. Appendices include the Shantalla Siding, Tourism and the Recess Hotel, The Ulster & Connaught Light Railway and The Marconi Railway, Clifden. Profusely illustrated.

Two hundred and fifty pages of fascinating information for the the serious enthusiast, All sorts of operating instructions, dimensions of turntables, location and capacity of water towers, accomodation crossings, lengths of platforms etc. All bound in a canvas cover. This particular copy, while being in very good overall condition, has seen the addition of pages from the weekly circular stapled in at various times and these staples have started to rust. They can easily be removed but that is for the new owner to undertake. Once to be found in every signal cabin in the country they have become almost impossible to find as the former were replaced by CTC. SOLD
